I went back to school at 37 and earned my doctorate at 42. I retired 4 years ago with the motto “65 going on 45”, and now I have just finished a Pilates teacher certification and have job offers from multiple studios. As I put in my resume, “I am new enough to the discipline to remember how it is to be new to Pilates while wearing a body that has endured the ravages of time, and I have more than 30 years of teaching experience to draw on in my efforts to bring the principles of Pilates to the masses.”
It is never too late to start new things, and I think what stops most folks is the “feeling like a geek” factor. When you start something new, like a yoga practice, dance lessons, Pilates, … there is the temptation to compare yourself to those who are already practiced. That comparison is fine as long as you are using it for a target, but counterproductive if you judge yourself adversely. Fortunately I don’t have that problem as I am a total geek anyway!
