I taught high school math in the mid-80’s and I still have my TI-84 calculator. I started college in 1968 as a Physics major. At that time the TI seventeen function calculators were available, but they cost over $300. That was as much as a quarters room and board and was way beyond my purchasing power. Instead, I had to spend oodles of hours suffering through computations using a slide rule and logarithm tables. After 2 years of that I quit Physics and became an English major for the next year.
